A Click in Time 7- In London Again (through a Child’s Eyes!

Back in London again, this time accompanied by two small grandchildren, Noa who is six and Paulo who is four. This is a very busy time indeed……… so lately I haven’t written any new posts nor had time to read incoming posts on WordPress. I hope to catch up soon!

Noa has been a London fanatic since he was three years old, He is a real artist and below is one of his paintings, now on display in my living room at home in Lima. It shows the London Eye, Tower Bridge, a double decker red bus, a London taxi as well as the Houses of Parliament and for him, the most important of all……. Big Ben! Noa completed this work of art when he was three years old.

We got off the plane at Heathrow, London and took the underground. No sooner had we arrived at my youngest daughter’s house in Fulham, Noa was busy with his pen again.

Paulo and Noa on the Tube – Picadilly line from Heathrow to Central London.

His main focus however, has always been, as I have already mentioned…. Big Ben, Here, a drawing he made from memory of Big Ben when we were sitting in a cafe in Lima having lunch.

The big day arrived…… we took a red double decker bus to Picadilly Circus, and then, walked to Trafalgar Square where he got his first view of Big Ben.

Trafalgar Square

From there, we walked down to the Thames and Westminster. It was a truly magical moment, one I will never forget….. the newly renovated tower, housing the famous bell, “Big Ben”, stood in front of us against the blue sky. The clock struck the hour and the bells began to toll…… ecstasy …… Noa was in heaven.

Noa and Big Ben.

We then strolled over Westminster Bridge to the London Eye. However we just had to return, then return again, at Noa’s request, to hear the magic bells that chimed every fifteen minutes……ahhhhhhh!

As we took an Uber river boat back to Fulham, we got yet another view of this iconic building.

By the time our Uber boat approached our destination it was past 8.00 p.m. However the sun had not yet set. This was unbelievable in the eyes of the children, as night falls throughout the year in Lima at about 6.30 p.m.

The next morning the artist crafted a model of Nelson’ Column.

To end with ………. Noa’s artistic tendencies are only matched by his deep interest in mechanical things…… such as …… steam engines. He entered a second moment of rapture as this locomotive steamed into the station of Horsted Keynes on the Bluebell Railway line.

Enough for now, but Noa and Paulo have only just started their adventures….. so much more to see ……. and draw!

The latest drawing.

Early next week, my grandchildren will return to Peru and my travels will last until mid September. The wandering will continue but without lovely Noa and Paulo by my side!

  1. What a terrific budding young artist! I have a 2 and a half year old grandson also and he loves anything to do with trains. He took his first subway ride this past weekend and can’t stop talking about it! Wonderful photos!

    1. He woukd love the Bluebell Railway. Working steam engines run along a railway route which now has no regular services. We rode on three different trainsxwith different locamotives and saw others passing by. They also lovedcridingbon rhe Underground and on the top of the double decker busses.

  10. Dear Geoff, I apologise for the lateness of my comment. I’ve had your post open on a tab on my laptop from the day you first published it, as I wanted to come back and do it justice.

You have amazing grandchildren, my friend. You must be so very proud of them, which comes across, quite rightly so, in your beautiful post. They are lucky boys to have the opportunity to travel so far at such a young age. Your photos are stunning and really show the essence of London so well. I grew up there, as I think I must have mentioned before, although I was in one of the London boroughs (Hackney) rather than the city. Noa and Paulo are adorable, and Noa’s talent for art is quite remarkable. Does he take after another artistic member of your family, or is he a natural child genius? Perhaps, you’re good at drawing as well as taking such marvellous photos?

I expect by now, your grandchildren will have returned to Peru. I wonder where you are until you return in September. I’ll look forward to reading about your further travels when you come back and have had time to write.

    1. Thanks Ellie, yes the grandchildren are back home in Pery but had a great time. Noa has artists, poets and politicians in his family. He has two famous descendents both called Jose Galvez. Many street names in many names are called Jose Galvez. I even used to take Noa to the Jose Galvez Park which has a statue of his descendent. Maybe there will be a statue of him one day! Just returned from Armenia and Georgia. Now in London. Off to Spain on Monday.

      1. I’m so glad the boys had such a lovely time with you in London, Geoff. How wonderful for Noa to have so many talented people amongst his ancestors and that he could see street names and a park in his ancestor’s names. With his talent, it wouldn’t surprise me if there wasn’t a statue of him in the future.

Did you have to take the boys back to Peru and then return to London again, as that’s a lot of extra travelling to do? You certainly do travel around to all sorts of interesting places, don’t you? Do you have any plans for being in London this time without the boys? I wish you a safe journey and happy times in Spain x 🌏
